About Topreads

Topreads is a book discovery engine for finding unusually worthwhile books, understanding why they are worth attention, and quickly getting them from reliable legal sources.

It is built on a dataset of 160,000+ highly rated books across more than 1,000 reader-created genre tags — cleaned into a browsable hierarchy of families, genres, subgenres, tropes, and themes.

Topreads is deliberately not a social network. There are no feeds, no follower counts, and no login required to browse everything.

How the ranking works

A perfect 5.00 from twelve readers should not outrank a 4.35 from nine million. Topreads uses a Bayesian weighted rating: books with few ratings are pulled toward the catalogue average, so a high score has to be earned by both quality and reach.

score = weighted_rating × 20 + log₁₀(ratings + 1) × 5 + log₁₀(reviews + 1)

Every list states its rule, and every book card shows a short reason — like “4.42 from 7k ratings” — so a rank is never a mystery.
